Paper Assignment 1
Due date: Submitted to the Paper 1 Dropbox Folder (under Assessments) on the course iCollege
page before 5:30pm on February 14th.
As we have discussed in class, one of the most defining characteristics of the US criminal justice
system (CJS) is the explosion in size and power it has seen over the past 30-40 years. In your
five-page essay you are to address the following:
1. In approximately 1 page briefly outline the extent of growth in the size and power of the
CJS from the mid-1960s to present. Use and properly cite sources to give examples of
increases in the size and power of the system.
2. In approximately 1.5 pages briefly explain the rational/legal theoretical orientation, with
most discussion focused on how it would make sense of the growth in size and power of
the CJS. Include citations to course readings and any other sources you reference in your
writing.
3. In approximately 1.5 pages briefly explain the criminal justice as a system orientation,
with most discussion focused on how it would make sense of the growth in size and
power of the CJS. Include citations to course readings and any other sources you
reference in your writing.
4. In the final page or so of your essay, conclude by stating which orientation you think is
most useful in understanding the rise in the size and power of the system and WHY.
Paper formatting:
-The paper is to include a cover page, and then 5 FULL pages of text addressing the
questions outlined above. It is ok to go a bit over 5 pages, but points will be deducted for
papers that are less than 5 pages. The cover page and references page do not count toward
the five pages.
-Paper is to be double-spaced, use 12pt Times New Roman font and have 1” margins on all
sides.
-Proper citations must be used in-text to indicate where you are drawing from class readings
and other sources, and a properly formatted list of references must be provided at the end of
the paper. Failure to cite properly is considered plagiarism in the GSU Student Honor Code.
APA citation style is preferred.
