DescriptionDUE IN CLASS MONDAY FEB 13, 2023
(submit to CANVAS before the start of class Feb 13.
And bring a hard copy to class for your reference if you wish)
ASSIGNMENT PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to build your confidence and develop the skills and experience necessary
(“brain train”) to recognize and make quick decisions (with justifications) as to why certain incoming data
points are relevant and impactful to your chosen industry/dream company (and career), and why other
incoming data is less relevant or not at all relevant to your industry/dream company.
YOUR SITUATION AND TASK
You are in a first-round job interview at your dream company. In this interview you are asked to identify
which two of the recent 5 Interesting Stats is most relevant to your dream job/company and the sector in
which it competes. Use the two links below and the extra Feb 7 link. Thus, you are evaluating 11 stats total
(see below) — 5 stats for each of these two weeks (Jan 30 and Feb 6), with an extra Tue Feb 7 stat added in for
your consideration.
5 Stats from Jan 30

5 Stats from Feb 6 — (employee focused, not so customer focused)

from Feb 7 – please add this single stat into your choices for this 3rd assignment (this
will make 11 stats to consider for assignment 3)

STEP 1. FIRST DRAFT OF YOUR THINKING
• Use the template below to chart your individual “first draft” responses. Identify each specific interesting
stat, the level of impact, whether the stat is an opportunity or threat (it will be one or the other) and why
(2 short bullet points only for the why for each stat you discuss).
• When assessing Impact for all stats (from these 2 weeks) consider very low (VL), low (L), medium (M), high
(H), and very high (VH) as your choices to frame your selection re: Impact.
• The stats you select to highlight will of course likely score VH, H or perhaps M (it would not make sense for
any stat you highlight to score L or VL). The stats you do not highlight or discuss would of course be the
ones least relevant to your dream company and naturally should score lower on Impact.
• You will complete only 1 cell (Opportunity or Threat) for each stat you identify. A single stat is unlikely to
be both an Opportunity and a Threat.
• If both of the interesting stats you identify is an “opportunity” (or if both are a “threat”) that is fine. It is up
to you decide and justify your thinking.

STEP 2. ROAD TEST YOUR FIRST DRAFT THINKING
• Once you have completed your first draft individually, create/join a Self-Selected Triad with 2 classmates (3
students [including you]).
• In your triad, share your industry focus (the context of your analysis) and detail for the other 2 students
your thinking/rationale for the 2 stats your identified and why. Note: different industry sectors, different
career interests in the same triad is fine, even desirable! – you all are evaluating the same 10 stats!
• Provide each other with quick constructive feedback:
o Do you believe the presenter’s rationale is solid for their selected stats? How can their rationale be
strengthened?
o Did they overlook a stat(s) that you believe would have an impact on their selected industry? Ask
them to justify why this stat was not included in their first draft.
• It is a requirement that you road test your thinking in your triad, one student at a time – 5-7 minutes each
should be sufficient). ZOOM will be very handy here if you cannot meet face to face.
• Keep in mind the assignment due date when organizing and meeting with your triad.

STEP 3. INDIVIDUAL DELIVERABLE/FINAL TEMPLATE/DELIVERABLE
Once you have completed discussion in your triad, complete your “final template” below and turn in this 1page document to the dropbox on CANVAS (before class on the due date – no late assignments accepted).
Yes, the template below is your 1-page deliverable. Make it smart and sharp.

Note:
• This is a PASS/FAIL assignment with no right or wrong responses – what matters here is YOUR thinking
and justifications as to WHY that stat was chosen (the triads here will be a good road test of your
thinking).

Be prepared if called upon in class on the assignment due date to discuss and justify your rationale for
selecting the stats you highlight here and why they are favorable (an opportunity) or unfavorable (a
threat) to your chosen industry.
PLEASE USE THIS TEMPLATE FOR TURNING IN
YOUR 3rd 5 INTERESTING STATS ASSIGNMENTS
In your opinion, which one (or two max!) of the 5 Interesting Stats for the two weeks is most relevant to your
industry, career and your dream job? Why this stat(s)? Describe and explain on the page below (single space
is fine) how you would you discuss the relevance of this stat(s) in a job interview at your dream
company/organization (one page max).
ALSO – assume your thinking caught the attention of some senior managers at your dream company. What additional
data/information would you like to access/know/uncover so you could have an informed lunch with these senior
managers. You do not necessarily need to find these sources, just let me know what you would additional data you
would like to find and where you believe you might find it!
